19.08.21

The Kalajoki central treatment plant, built by Skarta Finland (former Suomen Maastorakentajat Oy) for Vesikolmio Oy, is a significant environmental investment that, among other things, improves the quality of water in Kalajoki.

The project received green funding from Kuntarahoitus, which demonstrates the clear and measurable environmental benefits of the project. For the main contractor Skarta Finland, the phase-one work for the treatment plant project included mining, a lot of plumbing and groundwater reduction, as well as the construction of a control room, a pre-treatment plant, post-treatment tanks and aeration tanks and a large composting field. Vesikolmio operates in six municipalities in the Kalajokilaakso region and the value of the investment was approximately EUR 16 million. In phase 1, the amount of wastewater entering the treatment plant is about 6,500 cubic meters per day and the equivalent number is about 30,000. In phase 2, the amount of wastewater entering the treatment plant is about 9,000 cubic meters per day and the equivalent number is about 50,000.
